UK E-Scooter Laws: Safety Concerns Rise

Electric scooters are increasingly popular in the UK, despite being illegal on public roads. Many users ride without proper safety gear and weave through traffic, raising concerns about potential accidents.

The death of TV presenter Emily Hartridge and 31 e-scooter-related injuries in London last year have not slowed sales, which have risen by 50% in the past 12 months.

Ministers are considering legalizing e-scooters on roads and cycle lanes, citing their potential for reducing air pollution.

However, other cities that have legalized e-scooters are reevaluating their decisions due to increasing casualties.

The number of e-scooter injuries in the US quadrupled between 2014 and 2018, and UK lawyers are preparing for potential litigation related to e-scooter accidents.

“Ministers are reportedly on the brink of legalising them on roads and cycle lanes after an influential think-tank last week heralded them as a way of reducing air pollution.”
