A father from Widnes criticized the police for confiscating an electric scooter belonging to his 17-year-old son, who suffers from fatigue due to Crohn's disease.
The father bought the scooter to help his son with mobility, and was surprised when it was seized by the police, as it is sold in high street stores and has a maximum speed of 15mph.
The officer who seized the scooter admitted that the legal issues surrounding electric scooters are a "grey area." Inspector Neil Anson from Widnes Local Policing Unit clarified that under the Highways Act 1835, electric scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles and cannot legally be used on the road in the UK.
