E-Scooters: Gearing Up for Public Roads?

The Department of Transport plans to trial e-scooter hire schemes around the UK to encourage greener alternatives to public transport.

Although e-scooters are legal to own and ride on private land, using them on public roads is an offense.

The rental trials will help the government decide on rules and regulations, such as licensing requirements. E-scooters can reach speeds of over 30 mph, and there are concerns about their safety.

Studies have shown high rates of head injuries among e-scooter riders compared to cyclists.

Some suggest making helmets mandatory and increasing protective gear. Advocates argue that e-scooters have environmental benefits such as better air quality, less congestion, and reduced carbon emissions.

“London's Cycling Campaign said there are several benefits to e-scooters.

Mr Bogdanowicz said: "The benefits of e-scooters to individuals are lower journey times and lower costs compared to cars."

He adds: "The benefits to the rest of us are better air quality, less congestion, and fewer carbon emissions, which is why we support their legalisation.
