Electric Scooter Laws: UK's Battle for Change

Electric scooter usage is increasing in the UK, offering an eco-friendly alternative to cars and a convenient mode of transport. However, the death of a YouTube star has raised concerns about their safety.

E-scooters are currently illegal to use on public roads, pavements, and cycle lanes in the UK, but the government is considering a regulatory review to assess options for their safe implementation.

In Europe, e-scooters have gained popularity, though some cities have imposed restrictions due to safety concerns and littering.

The UK government's future mobility strategy emphasizes road user safety and might employ pilot schemes to inform decisions on e-scooter regulations.

“The Government has said it is mindful of evolving technologies and the “blurring of previously long established vehicle definitions.” Accordingly, it has committed to conduct a regulatory review that will consider options for appropriate testing regimes for e-scooters (and other micromobility vehicles). It expects to consult on initial proposals in the autumn of 2019.”
