Boris Johnson: Champion for Electric Scooter Freedom

London's mayor, Boris Johnson, has advocated for the legalisation of self-balancing electric scooters, allowing their use on the city's pavements.

Currently, these electric scooters, sometimes referred to as "hoverboards," are not permitted on UK pavements or roads due to legislation that also restricts Segways. The only exception is private property, where the owner has granted explicit permission.

Johnson consulted with Transport for London experts who believe the current law is outdated, and he supports the idea of legalising electric scooters as a new and liberating personal mobility option.

However, at present, using a self-balancing scooter on a pavement can result in a fine of up to £500, the same penalty as riding a bicycle on the pavement. Legalizing electric scooters in London could pave the way for more accessible transportation options for its residents.
